"Connecting Flights" is the fifth episode of the first season of Manifest. It premiered on October 22, 2018 on NBC.

Synopsis

Stories unfold for those left behind in the aftermath of Flight 828's disappearance. Meanwhile in the present, Cal takes Ben on a mysterious adventure that awakens Ben to his son's perplexing abilities. Michaela tries to protect Jared from consequences at work, while keeping her romantic feelings at bay.[src]

Plot

Ben argues with Michaela over risking their lives and freedom to follow the Callings. To try and defy the forces he feels are controlling his life, he impulsively takes Cal to Coney Island after a decision based on a coin-flip. However, while returning home, Cal takes Ben on a wild goose chase in the name of randomness, saying "it's all connected", which parallels a Calling Ben is having. Both are eventually led back to Thomas' hiding-place, where Cal exhibits a strange ability to receive information from unknown sources. This renews Ben's passion to find out what happened on flight 828.

Various characters reminisce about the intervening years between flight 828's disappearance and reappearance: Danny meeting Grace at grief counselling and connecting with Olive over her missing Cal; Lourdes and Jared bonding over losing Michaela and eventually starting a relationship; and all their new lives being thrown into uncertainty when flight 828 returns.

Bethany is taken in by the NSA for questioning.

Danny asks to see Grace again, but she makes excuses not to. He eventually turns up at her doorstep, relating his concerns about Olive, who still sees him as a father figure. Grace assures Olive that she isn't wrong for doing so, and they fondly look back on their time with Danny.

Jared continues to protect Michaela over the ruined ATF operation even as his career is on the line. Michaela begs Lourdes to convince Jared to tell the truth, but the latter is confident Jared is doing the right thing. She later accuses Jared of still having feelings for Michaela. Michaela shares her troubles with her father Steve, who advises her to tell Jared about her feelings for him. Vance gets Jared off the hook but demands information on Michaela in exchange.

A final flashback sees Cal on flight 828, looking into a bright light shining through the plane windows and whispering "it's all connected".
